For new consumer-identity projects, Microsoft’s current platform is Microsoft Entra External ID, the successor to Azure AD B2C. As of May 1, 2025, Azure AD B2C is closed to new customers — new tenants can no longer be created for organizations that didn’t already have one. MIGRATING FROM AZURE AD B2C TO ENTRA EXTERNAL ID
If you’re on Azure AD B2C today, there’s no need to panic — Microsoft continues to support existing B2C tenants, and we’ll keep managing yours for as long as you need. Here’s where things stand: Azure AD B2C Premium P2 (the tier with Identity Protection features) was discontinued in March 2026, with tenants automatically moved to P1. The core B2C P1 platform remains supported by Microsoft until at least May 2030 — so there’s no forced deadline to migrate immediately. But if you’re planning ahead, here’s what a migration to Entra External ID looks like with Protecon:
Assessment — We review your current B2C tenant: user flows, custom policies, branding, and integrations, and map out what moves over cleanly versus what needs to be rebuilt.
Custom policy re-implementation — Entra External ID uses a modernized policy model. Custom B2C policies don’t migrate automatically, so we rebuild your sign-up, sign-in, and profile-editing journeys natively on the new platform.
User migration — We move your consumer identities over with minimal disruption, using the same seamless sign-on and self-service password reset approaches we use for other identity migrations.
Cutover and validation — We test the new environment against your existing user journeys before go-live, so your customers experience zero downtime and no unexpected friction.

Entra ID provides the ability to use external identities as sign in identities to your tenant, without you have to manage the User Lifecycle. This allows you to assign permissions and access to external identities as if they were were own identities.
Provide access to SharePoint sites, OneDrive shares, Integrated Applications and even your selected managed service providers to your tenant without giving the keys of the kingdom to them. Segment them out with Dynamic groups and only provide access to the least privileged information possible.
